mg/mL and mcg/mL describe mass concentration: the amount of material present in each millilitre of solution. The arithmetic is straightforward, but unit mistakes can change an answer by a factor of 1,000.
The core relationship
Concentration equals mass divided by volume:
concentration = mass ÷ volume
If 10 mg is present in a final volume of 2 mL, the concentration is 10 ÷ 2 = 5 mg/mL. This says nothing about purity, identity, stability or suitability; it is only a mathematical relationship between the entered values.
Converting milligrams and micrograms
One milligram equals 1,000 micrograms. Therefore 5 mg/mL equals 5,000 mcg/mL. To convert mg to mcg, multiply by 1,000. To convert mcg to mg, divide by 1,000.

Keep the units attached
A reliable calculation writes units beside every number. For example, 10 mg ÷ 2 mL = 5 mg/mL. If the numerator is micrograms, the result is micrograms per millilitre. Do not silently change units halfway through a calculation.
Final volume versus added volume
The denominator must be the relevant final volume. In some laboratory preparations, adding a stated volume of solvent does not produce exactly the same final volume because the solute or container affects the total. Use the protocol’s defined volume and record the assumption.
Significant figures and measurement uncertainty
A calculator may display many decimal places, but the result cannot be more certain than the measurements used. If mass is recorded to two significant figures and volume to three, presenting a ten-decimal result creates false precision. Round only at the end and preserve enough working digits to avoid compounding rounding error.
A five-step check
- Write the equation before inserting numbers.
- Convert all mass values to the same unit.
- Confirm the denominator is the correct final volume.
- Calculate and keep the unit beside the answer.
- Reverse-check: concentration × volume should return the starting mass.
